Bordeaux Red: Haut Medoc

In the Haut-Médoc, Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec often added. The well-drained alluvial gravel soils and sub-soils are preferred by the Cabernet, with Merlot more expressive on deep clays and marls. Haut-Médoc refers to the location being upstream on the Gironde/Garonnne rivers from Médoc, hence Haut being upper (stream) as opposed higher in elevation. These red wines are typically elegant, complex and woody (from oak barrel aging), with red and black fruit flavors and aromas, with hints of licorice, menthol or eucalyptus and spice. On the palate, they are lively, generous, and powerful, with an aging potential of 5 to 20 years. The Haut-Médoc area extends from the Médoc border and Saint-Estèphe all the way down to the northern city limits of Bordeaux, the port, and includes the following left bank appellations (from north to south): Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Listrac-Médoc, Moulis-en-Médoc, and Margaux.

  • Chateau de Braude

    This property is the part of Château Mongravey Margaux that lies in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The wine has more structure than your typical Haut-Médoc at this price and approaches the Margaux with its potential silkiness. It has a beautiful, deep ruby-violet color, a structured nose of red fruits, pain grillé, vanilla and oak. On the palate, the wine is elegant, full and round with red fruits and almost silky with a strong structure and long finish. This is an elegant wine that will keep for 10+ years.

    The vineyard, about 7 and a half acres in size, with limestone and stones for soil, is planted to 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. After hand harvesting, the grapes are sorted and de-stalked before traditional fermentation in stainless thermo-regulated tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spends 8 months in oak barrels, one-third of which are new.

    • Chateau Moulin Rouge

      This wine is comparable to a St. Julien because of its location just west of the village. It is composed of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet, and 10% Cabernet Franc, grown on stony soils and hand-harvested. After traditional vinification, this lovely wine is aged 12 months in oak barrels. Château du Moulin Rouge has a wide palate of aromas, is rich, robust and full-bodied, with excellent structure. Elegant flavors mix with soft tannins to provide a wine that is drinkable on release yet has superior aging ability.

      • Chateau Fort Lignac

        The district Cussac-Fort-Medoc has 598 hectares under vines and lies between Moulis and St. Julien and has two hectares that have the right to the ‘Moulis’ appellation, and this production appears under the commune of Moulis. Nearly 42 acres have the right to the St. Julien appellation and their production shows under the commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. The vineyards are typically planted 50%-70% Cabernet Sauvingon, 30-50% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot.

        Château Fort-Lignac covers 4.4 hectares in the district of Cussac-Fort-Médoc and was previously owned by Annie Fort and Henri Pradère, now owned by to M. J.E. Borie. The Château is not far from the well-known estates Châteaux Moulin Rouge, Lanesann, and Bel Air.

        Deep garnet all the way to the edge of the glass, the wine has fairly strong aromas of spicy oak, cassis, black plum, and granite. On the palate, ripe, round red and black fruit overpowers the oak and spice, which linger as the fruit dissipates. On the finish, the supple yet substantial tannins intermingle with the fruit and spice, to give a lingering, complex finish that ends clean and dry.
