Loire Valley: Chateau Moncontour

The Château Moncontour winery is one of the oldest of the Loire Valley and since the tenth century, caves were excavated in the cliffs to vinify and preserve its precious wine. During the Renaissance period, the ever-growing fame to the wines crossed France’s borders and spread across northern Europe. Not only are the vineyards cultivated on the best areas overlooking the Loire, but the prestige of Moncontour also comes from the historic site with its elegant castle. Though the estate dates from the 13th century, the Château dates from the end of the 15th century.

  • Vouvray Demi-Sec

Made from 100% Chenin Blanc, the Vouvray Demi-Sec is made from the ‘Aubuis’ soils, which are primarily clay soils. The pneumatic presses in the ultra-modern winery do a slow and soft pressing of the grapes before fermentation at 65F in temperature-controlled stainless tanks. The cool fermentation maintains the volatile components of this delicate grape.

The color of the wine is fine yellow with a delicate green hue when young, with a floral and intensely aromatic nose typical of excellent Chenin Blanc. The full fruit flavors of green apple evolve to quince and pear on the palate and a finish that shows an excellent balance between acidity, sweetness, and alcohol. The Demi-Sec version retains about 2-2.5% residual sugar.

    • Jovly Chinon

This appellation Chinon comes from the vineyard at Château du Coudray Montpensier owned by Château Moncontour (see picture at left). The wine is completely Cabernet Franc, done in a modern style with ample fruit, ripe red fruit aromas and flavors. Very well-balanced and medium-bodied, Jovly Chinon has very well-integrated tannins for easy drinking and maximum enjoyment. The French will often choose this for lighter red meats, charcuterie, soft cheeses, grilled fish, basically as an everyday red. With the Stelvin twist-off closure, the wine is easy to open, easy to store and a great idea for picnics or outdoor concerts. For summer drinking, you may serve slightly chilled, at cellar temperature (55 degrees F) to get the most enjoyment from the wine.

      • Jovly Vouvray

This appellation Vouvray comes from two estates: Château Moncontour and Domaine de Vaugondy made of 100% Chenin Blanc from chalky soil. Like its counterpart at Château Moncontour, this wine has a pale yellow color with a floral and green apple bouquet that entices you with good fruit and freshness. Medium-bodied, it shows notes of granny smith apple, honey, acacia, and has a beautiful balance between the fruit and refreshing acidity and a finish that is just off-dry, about 2.5 grams of residual sugar, typical for a demi-sec Vouvray. Easy to open and store with a Stelvin twist-off closure.

Serve well-chilled. You can use it as an aperitif by itself, with salads, seafood, spicy or Asian dishes. This wine is very versatile: by the pool, with brunch or before dinner.
